Keeping Athletes’ Eyes in the Game

Dan is an international authority on sporting eye and facial trauma, serving as match ophthalmologist for the Welsh Rugby Union and working with leading sporting bodies. His expertise supports elite athletes and enhances care for patients in the wider community.

Dan has experience of general sport and exercise medicine but in the last decade has concentrated on sporting trauma to the eye and face, becoming an international authority, publishing peer-reviewed papers and book chapters.

He is the match ophthalmologist for the Welsh Rugby Union and is a Council Member of the Faculty of Sport and Exercise Medicine (UK).

He was also part of the medical team for the 2014 Rugby World Cup treating players from all around the world.

Dan was part of the eye team that helped deliver medical care to the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow in 2014.

Sadly eye injuries and facial lacerations are not uncommon in contact sports such as rugby and football and are routine in full contact sports such as boxing.

Dan regularly works for the British Board of Boxing Control and assists the Welsh Football Association Medical Team.
